Insurance and Condition Surveys

An insurer may request a survey to obtain information about a vessel's condition before offering or continuing cover. The requirements can vary according to the vessel, its age, construction, intended use and the insurer's own criteria.

Windermere Yacht Services undertakes agreed condition surveys for yachts and small craft where the requested work falls within our scope.

What is an insurance condition survey?

A condition survey records the observed condition of a vessel within an agreed inspection scope. Depending on the requirements, this may involve examining accessible structural areas, fittings, equipment and other relevant components.

An insurance condition survey is not automatically the same as a full pre-purchase survey. The work required should be established from the insurer's written instructions before the inspection is booked.

Before arranging your survey

Please provide:

  • The insurer's survey request or instructions.

  • The vessel's make, model, approximate length and construction.

  • The vessel's location and access arrangements.

  • Any previous survey reports, where available.

  • Any known defects or outstanding recommendations.

We can then discuss the requested scope and confirm whether the work can be undertaken.

Findings and recommendations

The report records the findings of the agreed inspection. Where concerns are identified, further investigation, maintenance or remedial work may be recommended.

The report does not itself determine whether an insurer will provide cover. Acceptance of a survey and any conditions imposed remain matters for the insurer.
